I read a lot, generally finishing a book every couple of days, except when I am really busy.  As a result, I am always on the lookout for free and cheap sources of books.

My ebook reader has become my best friend, partly because I've discovered how many classics and older books I can get for free (as well as the occasional free book for a publisher's promotion).  Project Gutenberg is one of my best resources for free ebooks, and as I've discovered, there are many older biographies available on the website.

For instance, you can download both The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and Douglass's My Bondage and My Freedom.  The Story of My Life, the famous autobiography of Helen Keller, is also available.  The Life of Charlotte Bronte (Part 1 and Part 2) is one of my favorites, Bronte fan that I am.  There are tons of others: biographies and autobiographies of some of the most famous people in history, such as George Washington, Charles Dickens, Shakespeare, and so on.

Of course, these books are all in the public domain, which means they are older.  Sometimes older histories and biographies aren't quite accurate to today's standards, because our historians and biographers have found new information about their subjects.  But some of these biographies and autobiographies are also classics in their own rights, and can be worthwhile to read for that reason alone.  Also, autobiographies can be important even when more accurate information has been uncovered, because they are windows into the person's actual thoughts and memories.
